1. iRobot s8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is an excellent option for a wide range of homes. It is able to vacuum and mop well and is extremely navigable using both GPS and laser sensors, and has a wide range of controls and features accessible via the app. It has a handy feature that lets you create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and also to create Keep Out zones in areas where you don't wish it to go. Like all Roomba devices, it is updated with new software updates that make it even more efficient over time.

It's expensive but also one of the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It's equipped with a powerful battery that can vacuum a large home in under two hours, and it can switch between mopping and vacuuming by pressing a button. It will automatically empty the dust bin above its charging station, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the bin after every run.

It has a wide range of other features that make it an excellent choice for homes of all sizes that include intelligent obstacle avoidance that uses the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It isn't often entangled or entrapped during a cleaning process and is the best at avoiding power cables and other objects I've tested. However, it's not as accurate in detecting pet waste or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

Although Anker-owned Eufy has made a name for itself in low-cost robot vacuums it's not yet an all-in-one model that could also mop. This is changing with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive array of modern features and is able to compete against much more expensive models.

The main selling point of Eufy's this device is its laser navigation. The X8 utilizes a laser mapping system that is more precise than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to create an accurate map of your home. It also has the ability to store multiple maps. This is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum on bare floors, slinging debris under its side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin with relative ease. The tyres are adept at securing edges and corners even though they are circular. It's not a great kitty litter scooper, however as our tests show it is able to remove around 90 percent of the fur off hard floors.

There's a basic mopping mode that uses the same water tank as the vacuuming one. While this is a good option for loose spills but you cannot control how much water it uses which can limit its effectiveness for more serious stains. It does a good job at picking up hair from pets. It has a higher rate of pick-up than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, effective appliances. It features a stunning design, superb navigation and a powerful cleaning power. However, it does have some operational hiccups that prevent it from being ranked as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping technique that uses a LIDAR to map a room as well as a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and eliminating obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). Once the room is mapped and assigned, you can assign virtual no go areas and preferred sections to the robot. You can also start cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, view a live feed from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.

4. Shark ION

This budget robovac is a robot that looks just like the other, but comes with some extra features and is more efficient. Its intelligent mapping system creates 2D and 3-D maps of your house and uses them to navigate and avoid obstacles. It's also able to detect common obstructions such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors with a bump detector, and an infrared sensor that keeps the vacuum away from steps makes it one our most agile vacuums.

It was able to climb over thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were impressive as well and its overall score on carpet and bare floors was better than the competition, and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of surface litter and embedded pet hair from our lab test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of the competition; there's an oblong cleaning button at the top and you can access it via the app or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, set no-go zones, and see its cleaning history. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks stylish in your home. Its rear dustbin is easily accessible for emptying, and taking out the filters is also easy.

5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic, no-frills robot vacuum at a low cost, the Eufy 11S is a great option. It lacks some of the smart features, such as digital mapping and Alexa integration, which are found in more expensive models, but if you don't need these functions, you can save a little money by purchasing this model.

This robot is easy to set up and use. It does not require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, however it does come with the ability to control the remote with a remote that lets you choose between various modes and adjust the suction level. The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's costly but it's an excellent performer and, in some ways, the most advanced robot vacuum you can buy. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is a marvel to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than most competitors, such as the ability to set virtual boundary markers using its mobile app. While its application is a bit slow and the 980 may spin out a bit while rolling over cables, it's an extremely efficient robot vacuum.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it makes use of its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path for each cycle. The result is cleaner floors, and a cleaner vacuum than other high-end robot vacuums.

Other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes which grab dirt from hard floors and carpet and a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. The sensor for floor tracking assists it in maneuvering through furniture, along edges and on stairs. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. It also automatically returns to its base station for hassle-free charging between sessions. Although the 980's battery lifespan and bin size isn't as impressive as other robot vacuums, it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
